Egypt Live Train Tracking
Egypt's rail network is operated by Egyptian National Railways (ENR), one of the oldest railway systems in the world, dating back to 1854. The network covers around 5,000 kilometres, concentrated along the Nile Valley and Delta, connecting Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, and the Suez Canal cities. This page tracks Egyptian trains using timetable-based position interpolation from official published ENR schedules.
Cairo's Ramses Station (Mahattat Ramses) is Egypt's principal rail hub, serving as the departure point for services along the Delta line to Alexandria and the Upper Egypt line south to Luxor and Aswan. The Cairo to Alexandria corridor is Egypt's busiest, with Spanish-built Talgo and French-built trains covering the roughly 220-kilometre journey in about 2 to 3 hours depending on the service and number of stops.
Overnight sleeper trains, operated under the Watania (formerly Abela) brand, run the Cairo to Luxor and Cairo to Aswan routes, popular with tourists visiting the temples and monuments of Upper Egypt. These sleeper services offer private cabins with dinner and breakfast included, departing Cairo in the evening and arriving the following morning, avoiding the need for a domestic flight or long daytime bus journey.
Daytime express trains between Cairo and Upper Egypt also run in VIP, First, and Second class, with VIP and First class offering air-conditioned reserved seating. Egypt has been steadily modernising its rolling stock and signalling, including new Spanish and Russian-built trainsets introduced on the Cairo-Alexandria and Cairo-Aswan corridors to replace older equipment and improve reliability and speed.
Tickets are booked through the official ENR e-ticketing website (enr.gov.eg) or at station booking offices, with foreign tourists sometimes required to book sleeper trains through authorised travel agents rather than the general public portal. Advance booking is recommended for sleeper trains and for travel during major holiday periods such as Eid, when demand on the Cairo-Alexandria and Cairo-Upper Egypt corridors rises sharply.
