High-Speed Rail

High-Speed Train Journeys Around the World

France's TGV covers Paris–Lyon in under 2 hours. Germany's ICE networklinks Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and Cologne with trains running every 30 minutes at peak times. Overnight Trains

Overnight Sleeper Train Journeys

Overnight sleeper trains let you travel while you sleep — saving both a hotel night and daytime hours. Pakistan Railways' Karachi–Lahore overnight route(14h) runs in AC Sleeper with berths from PKR 2,200. Indian Railways operates the famous Rajdhani Express on overnight routes from Delhi to Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata with full bedding included. In Europe, Nightjet connects Vienna, Zurich, Berlin and Amsterdam with private sleeping compartments.

Train vs Flight

Is Train Travel Faster Than Flying?

For city-pair journeys under 700 km, train travel is often faster door-to-door than flying when you include airport check-in (2h), security (30–60min), boarding, luggage collection and the city-centre transfer. A Paris–London flight takes 1h 15m in the air but 4h+ door-to-door. The Eurostar train takes 2h 16m from central Paris to central London — faster, cheaper, and with no baggage fees or liquid restrictions.

Travel Tips

Train Journey Planning Tips to Save Time & Money

Book as early as possible

Advance train tickets are 40–70% cheaper than walk-up fares. UK National Rail opens bookings 12 weeks ahead; Deutsche Bahn up to 180 days; Indian Railways 120 days.

Travel off-peak for lower fares

Morning shoulder (before 07:00) and early evening (after 19:00) trains carry lower peak surcharges. Midweek Tuesday–Thursday fares are often cheapest.

Split ticketing saves money

On many networks, buying two tickets covering the same journey (e.g. London–Birmingham + Birmingham–Manchester) costs less than one through-ticket.

Download e-tickets before you travel

Most modern rail apps allow offline e-ticket access. Save PDFs or screenshots — station Wi-Fi can be unreliable and data roaming is expensive in some countries.

Check seat reservation requirements

Rail pass holders still need paid seat reservations on TGV, Thalys, Eurostar, Shinkansen, AVE and ICE sprinter trains. Book these at the same time as your pass.

Arrive early for international trains

Cross-border trains like Eurostar (London–Paris), Thalys and Renfe-SNCF require passport control and check-in 30–40 minutes before departure.

FAQ

Train Journey Planning — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find train schedules between two cities?

Use the search form at the top of this page. Enter your departure city and destination, select a date and click Search Trains. You can also browse by country — select your origin country, then navigate to the route page for your specific city pair.

How far in advance can I book train tickets?

Booking windows vary by operator: UK National Rail opens 12 weeks (84 days) ahead; Deutsche Bahn up to 180 days; Indian Railways (IRCTC) 120 days; Pakistan Railways 30 days; SNCF France 120 days; Amtrak USA 11 months. Advance tickets are always the cheapest — prices rise as the departure date approaches.

Is it cheaper to buy a rail pass or individual tickets?

Rail passes offer good value for 4+ journeys within a short period or multi-country European travel. For 1–3 journeys, individual advance tickets are almost always cheaper. Use our fare comparison to check both options before buying.

Can I track my train in real time on TrainTrackings?

Yes. The Live Train Tracker shows real-time positions for trains in Germany, Belgium, Norway, Finland, Ireland, Malaysia, USA (Amtrak) and more using official GPS feeds. For India, Pakistan, Japan and other countries, schedule-based positioning estimates your train's current location between stations.

What is the cheapest train class for a long journey?

Economy or 2nd class is cheapest on European networks. On Indian and Pakistani routes, Economy class starts from very low fares but has no air conditioning — AC Chair Car or 3A Sleeper is the recommended minimum for journeys over 4 hours. Overnight journeys in AC Sleeper effectively replace a hotel night, so the total cost can be lower than economy class + accommodation.

Do I need a seat reservation with a rail pass?

Yes, on most high-speed trains. Eurail/Interrail pass holders must book paid seat reservations on TGV (France), Thalys, Eurostar, ICE Sprinter (Germany), AVE (Spain), Frecciarossa/Italo (Italy), and Shinkansen (Japan). Reservation fees range from €5–€35. Reservations are usually free on regional and Intercity trains.

What is the difference between direct and connecting train journeys?

A direct train runs from your departure station to your destination without requiring you to change trains. A connecting journey involves one or more train changes at intermediate stations. Always check the minimum connection time — at least 10 minutes for domestic trains and 30 minutes for international/cross-border services where passport control applies.
