History of Railways in Switzerland

The railway system in Switzerland has evolved over more than a century and a half into one of the defining features of the national transport infrastructure. The earliest lines were built during the colonial and industrial expansion era, connecting major ports and administrative centres to facilitate the movement of goods and officials across difficult terrain. These first routes established the foundational corridor that much of the modern network still follows today.

The expansion of the network through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries brought the railway to smaller towns and rural areas, fundamentally transforming the economy and social fabric of Switzerland. Agricultural products could be transported to market faster, mail delivery was accelerated, and for the first time long-distance travel became accessible to ordinary citizens rather than only the wealthy.

Following independence and modernisation programmes through the mid-to-late twentieth century, Switzerland's railways were nationalised and restructured under a single state operator in most cases, enabling coordinated investment in electrification, rolling stock renewal, and track upgrades. Today the network is a mix of legacy infrastructure on older routes and modern high-speed or electrified corridors on the busiest intercity links.
